Queensland Rail Union Declares Rolling Strikes Following Unsuccessful Pay Negotiations

The Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) in Queensland is poised to initiate industrial action over the next fortnight due to stalled pay negotiations with the state government. This decision comes following an unproductive conference at the Fair Work Commission where the proposed wage agreement was deemed insufficient, closely mirroring a previously rejected offer.

The planned work stoppages stand to exacerbate the current strain on the Queensland rail network, which has been grappling with extended track closures throughout April, ongoing maintenance efforts, and the impending NRL’s Magic Round—a four-day rugby league event at Suncorp Stadium set to take place in mid-May.

Union Queensland branch secretary Peter Allen expressed disappointment at the negotiation outcomes, highlighting that while some progress was made, it fell short of their expectations. The strikes will impact various workforce sectors, including maintenance crews and train signallers; however, Allen assured that train services themselves would not be halted. The approach is described as “measured and deliberate,” with any resultant disruptions seen as a consequence of Queensland Rail’s choices.

In anticipation of the Magic Round from May 14-17, Queensland Rail has announced plans to introduce over a dozen additional rail services. Still, the potential for service disruptions remains, prompting calls for the unions to return to the negotiation table instead of impacting commuters’ journeys to work, school, or sporting events.

A Queensland Rail spokesperson reiterated their commitment to providing safe and reliable train services, stating that a fair offer has been extended to the union, including a separate agreement for electrical workers—an essential demand from the Electrical Trades Union. They underscored that ongoing industrial action is hindering the effective delivery of services for passengers.

As the situation unfolds, both the union and Queensland Rail remain at an impasse, with the hope for a resolution that satisfies the needs of both workers and commuters.
