Mark Nawaqanitawase, the versatile athlete known for his cross-code talent, has not entirely dismissed the idea of returning to the NRL in the future. As he prepares to transition back to rugby union, his goal is to secure a position in the Wallabies’ World Cup squad.

With his three-year tenure at the Roosters concluding at the end of this season, Nawaqanitawase is set to join the Saitama Wild Knights in Japan. During a media interaction in Bondi, he skillfully sidestepped inquiries regarding potential representation in either sport, remaining focused on his current commitments with the Roosters.

At 25, he has emerged as a candidate for a debut with the NSW Blues, having participated in a pre-season Origin camp; however, he noted that he had not recently heard from coach Laurie Daley. Despite his desire to represent the Blues, he emphasised that his attention is firmly on the Roosters, stating that thoughts of joining the Wallabies are “the last thing on my mind.”

Nawaqanitawase acknowledged that his time in league has fundamentally changed his game, describing himself as “a different player” than he was a few years ago. He feels he has developed into a stronger, faster, and more skilled athlete, citing improvements in both offensive and defensive aspects of his gameplay. “I’ve learned so much that I know it will make me a better player wherever I go,” he expressed.

While the prospect of returning to league remains a possibility, he admitted it is not his immediate concern, saying, “It could be an option, but it’s so far away so I don’t know.”

Looking ahead, he has also expressed his bittersweet feelings about leaving the Roosters, remarking on the emotional impact of his departure. “I’m going to miss everyone,” he shared, reflecting on the friendships forged at the club. As he contemplates his final days with teammates, including Angus Crichton—who will also transition to rugby union—Nawaqanitawase is conscious of the emotional weight of goodbyes that lie ahead.

Despite the mixed emotions surrounding his departure, he remains grounded in the present, focusing on maximising his final moments at the Roosters before embarking on a new chapter in Japan.
