In a challenging setback for the Waratahs’ playoff hopes, prop Daniel Botha has been cited for “dangerous contact” following his collision with Crusaders lock Antonio Shalfoon during the Waratahs’ recent 35-20 defeat. The incident, which occurred in the 61st minute, involved Botha making a late attack at a ruck. Shalfoon was seen momentarily holding his head after the contact. Botha’s hearing is scheduled for Tuesday night, just days before the crucial match against the Western Force on Friday.
Waratahs coach Dan McKellar is keen to prevent any disciplinary action against Botha, who has made a significant impact this season after stepping up as the first-choice tight-head prop, particularly after playing in the shadow of Taniela Tupou last year. With Sifa Amone starting ahead of Botha in the recent match, the switch was largely strategic, aiming to bolster the team during critical moments. Despite this, Amone had difficulties against the formidable Crusaders front row.
Should Botha face suspension, it would not only diminish the Waratahs’ scrummaging strength but also hinder their capacity to generate quick ball from set-piece plays, potentially jeopardising their offensive strategy. This is particularly concerning as the team is set to welcome back Wallabies talent Joseph Aukuso-Suaalii after a two-month injury absence for their clash against the Force.
Suaalii’s return is expected to be pivotal, especially with the Waratahs currently positioned eighth on the Super Rugby standings, four points adrift of the sixth-placed Queensland Reds. McKellar expressed optimism about Suaalii’s contribution, highlighting his experience, leadership, and ability to create scoring opportunities. He noted the team’s struggle in the absence of Suaalii, who has participated in only eight of their 23 matches since joining.
Additionally, Suaalii’s comeback is anticipated to enhance the match-up against his former NSW teammate Zac Lomax. Lomax, who secured a win in his first starting game against the Crusaders, scored and assisted in a try during that outing. The Force, under coach Simon Cron, are likely to exploit perceived weaknesses in the backline of the Waratahs, focusing on Lomax as a pivotal attacking target.
As the Waratahs prepare for this crucial encounter, Botha’s potential absence and Suaalii’s return will play significant roles in shaping the team’s chances of clinching a finals spot.
