Trump and Kennedy Reaffirm Their Outlandish Mathematical Assertions

In recent discussions, the US President has asserted that his administration’s policies could lower prescription drug prices by as much as 600 per cent. Such a statement, however, has been deemed mathematically unfeasible. This viewpoint was echoed by Senator Elizabeth Warren during a committee hearing where she scrutinised the accuracy of Trump’s claims regarding drug pricing.

Robert F. Kennedy, while speaking in the Oval Office, attempted to clarify Trump’s assertions, contending that if a drug’s price escalated from $100 to $600, the subsequent drop back to $100 represents a 600 per cent saving. However, this interpretation is flawed; it is impossible to reduce anything by more than 100 per cent of its original value. Thus, both Trump and Kennedy appear to miscalculate the fundamentals of percentage reductions.

Warren challenged Kennedy on this notion, stating that if companies were to offer such exaggerated discounts, it would imply that they should effectively pay consumers to utilise their medications. Kennedy’s defence of Trump included a suggestion that the former president has a unique perspective on calculating percentages, claiming there are various methods to approach them.

Despite these discussions, the consensus remains that the idea of reducing drug prices by such a significant margin lacks mathematical grounding. The debate highlights the need for clarity and accuracy in discussions surrounding healthcare costs and the complexities of economic terminology.
