Two men, Dan Fitzgerald and Stu Fillman, have made headlines after surviving an astonishing 24 hours adrift at sea off the Queensland coast, following a strong current that separated them from their dive boat. The pair, aged 43 and 45, were scuba diving at Flat Rock, located north of Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island, when they were unexpectedly swept away.

During their harrowing ordeal, the divers relied solely on each other for support, as they floated four kilometres from shore without a life raft. Fortunately, their dry suits played a crucial role in keeping them warm, which contributed to their survival in the challenging conditions. They were ultimately spotted and rescued after a comprehensive search operation was launched by authorities when the dive boat crew raised the alarm upon their prolonged absence.

The pair’s rescue was captured on camera, showcasing the relief on their faces as they were airlifted by the Westpac Surf Life Saving helicopter, almost a full day after they had been reported missing. Rescue crew member Alex Carroll recalled the moment, noting the visible weight lifted from the men’s shoulders upon seeing the rescue team.

Expressing gratitude post-rescue, Fitzgerald thanked the emergency services—those in the air, on water, and on land—for their efforts in ensuring a positive outcome. As they reconnected with family, both men were in surprisingly good spirits and physical condition considering their ordeal at sea. Their story serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of ocean activities and the critical importance of safety measures while diving.
