Motorists in south-east Queensland have received a stark warning after a woman was charged for driving through floodwaters resulting from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. This incident happened early yesterday morning on Newmarket Road, where police were called to rescue the driver, only to find her car abandoned and floating in the floodwaters.

The 58-year-old woman from Enoggera reportedly ventured into the flooding, causing her vehicle to become submerged. Authorities issued her a charge for driving without care, and she is scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on April 14.

This case is part of a broader trend of emergency rescues prompted by severe weather conditions that have led to heavy rainfall and dangerous winds across south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales. In a separate incident, an 84-year-old man found himself trapped in his car after ignoring a road closure sign in Oxley, requiring police assistance for his rescue. Meanwhile, a 61-year-old woman was rescued from floodwaters in Murarrie, and a 59-year-old man from Cannon Hill’s vehicle also needed towing after he attempted to navigate through fast-flowing water.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries linked to these incidents. Brisbane disaster district coordinator and acting assistant commissioner Rhys Wildman emphasised that there is “no excuse” for disregarding road closures or entering floodwaters. He highlighted the dangers posed to both individuals and emergency responders, noting that even shallow-looking water can wreak havoc on vehicle traction, losing control in as little as 15cm.

Emergency services continue to address the aftermath of the cyclone, working to remove fallen trees and debris obstructing roadways. Several traffic lights remain inoperative, leaving motorists navigating intersections without signals. The travelling public is advised to approach these areas with extreme caution, giving way to vehicles on their right and maintaining awareness while driving.

This situation serves as a critical reminder of the risks associated with driving during severe weather conditions and the imperative for caution in flooded areas.
