In a recent development following a contentious meeting in the Oval Office, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed regret over the disagreement with US President Donald Trump, while remaining optimistic about future cooperation. He indicated his readiness to work under Trump’s leadership to achieve a sustainable peace for Ukraine, stating, “None of us want an endless war.” Zelenskyy also signalled Ukraine’s willingness to sign a significant agreement regarding rare-earth minerals and security collaboration with the United States.
The fallout from the meeting included Trump’s critique that Ukraine was not seeking peace talks, which prompted Zelenskyy to clarify that Ukraine is indeed prepared to negotiate promptly. He said, “It is time to make things right,” emphasising the necessity for constructive dialogue moving forward.
The situation escalated as the US announced a pause in military aid to Ukraine, a decision that has heightened concerns in Kyiv about the implications for its ongoing conflict with Russia. This pause is contingent on Ukraine’s commitment to peace negotiations, as outlined by a White House official. The delay in aid is not anticipated to affect the battlefield immediately, as Ukrainian forces continue to effectively counter Russian advances. Nevertheless, Ukrainian soldiers and officials have voiced alarm, sensing a potential increase in vulnerabilities as the support from the US is crucial for defending against Russian aggression.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal highlighted that any peace terms must be favourable to Ukraine, insisting that the recognition of Russian occupation of Ukrainian territories is unacceptable. He expressed the importance of securing concrete security guarantees from allies in any negotiations.
While Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for US support, fears persist that Trump’s administration might pursue a ceasefire that could disadvantage Ukraine.
