Stargazers, get ready for a treat during the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower, which is set to dazzle the sky tonight and tomorrow. This annual event, occurring from April 17 to April 26, promises a show of up to 20 meteors per hour, primarily visible in the Northern Hemisphere but also observable from Australia under the right conditions.

The Lyrid meteor shower is celebrated for being one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, with sightings traced back around 2,700 years. The spectacular phenomenon occurs as Earth travels through the debris left by Comet Thatcher (C/1861 G1). As our planet intersects this trail, tiny particles from the comet ignite upon entering Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of up to 47 km/s, creating brief, bright streaks of light.

Unlike other meteor showers, the Lyrids don’t usually leave glowing trails but can sometimes surprise observers with brilliant fireballs. The optimal viewing time in Australia typically falls around April 21 and 22, with the best opportunity for spotting meteors in the early hours after midnight. Fortunately for enthusiasts, the meteor shower can be enjoyed without the need for telescopes or other specialised equipment.

If you wish to experience this celestial display, head to a location with a dark, clear sky away from light pollution. Dress for the weather as you search the northern to north-eastern horizon. Allow approximately 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and keep an eye out for flashes or streaks of light. When you spot a meteor, don’t forget to make a wish!

In case you miss this meteor shower, there’s no need to despair. Mark your calendars for early May when the Eta Aquarids meteor shower peaks on May 6 and 7, offering another chance to marvel at falling stars. Grab a blanket, gather your friends or family, and enjoy the wonders of the night sky!
