This weekend, Sydney will host its annual City 2 Surf marathon, leading to road closures in the CBD and eastern suburbs. An expected 90,000 participants will take part in this popular charity event, running from the city centre to Bondi Beach on Sunday. Police will implement road blockades starting early Sunday morning, and alternate routes can be tracked via Live Traffic Sydney.
Detective Superintendent Jodi Radmore has stated that police will assist with the road closures and ensure public safety during this major event. The police have collaborated with government agencies and the event organisers to facilitate a smooth experience for all involved. Community members are urged to plan any necessary trips ahead of time, as significant disruptions and special event clearways will be in effect across the CBD and eastern suburbs.
Road closures will commence as early as 3:30 am for parts of Hyde Park, with closures extending to other areas throughout the morning. Key times include:
– 3:30 am: Hyde Park closures
– 6:00 am: Closures from the city to Edgecliff
– 7:00 am: Restrictions from Double Bay to North Bondi
– 6:00 am: Bondi Beach finish area closures
The race will officially start at 7:35 am, with staggered starts occurring every 15 minutes, concluding at 9:27 am. The last group of runners will begin the marathon by 9:50 am, and the finishing line will close at 1:50 pm.
For attendees looking to arrive by car, a designated drop-off zone is available on Phillip Street between King Street and Martin Place; however, no parking will be permitted in this area. Public transport options include free buses and trains for marathon participants, with St James, Martin Place, and Town Hall stations as the closest access points. Those with disabilities or limited mobility should arrive early to navigate the anticipated crowds and road closures.
Roads in the CBD are expected to reopen by 11:30 am, with subsequent reopening in the eastern suburbs through the afternoon, culminating in all Bondi roads being accessible by 4:00 pm.
A full list of major road closures is in effect throughout the marathon route, including:
– Sections of College St, Macquarie St, and Park Street will be closed in the CBD.
– New South Head Road and other key routes will experience various closures based on the event schedule.
The City 2 Surf not only promotes health and fitness but also raises substantial funds for charity, making it a significant event on Sydney’s calendar. Participants and the community are encouraged to stay informed and plan accordingly for this weekend’s festivities.
