Concerned supporters of the Knights have launched an online petition aimed at retaining star centre Dane Gagai through the 2026 season. Gagai, a former State of Origin player, has emerged as a standout performer in an otherwise struggling team, particularly showcasing his skills during a dramatic comeback against the Sea Eagles where the Knights rallied from a 16-0 deficit. Despite Gagai’s impressive form, club officials previously opted not to exercise his contract option for the upcoming season, though this decision may be reconsidered given his recent performances.

The petition has garnered substantial backing, with thousands of fans advocating for Gagai to remain in the Hunter region for another year.

In a contrasting situation, the Dragons appear set to benefit from a potential long-term commitment from in-form hooker Jacob Liddle, who is reportedly inclined to reject offers from rival teams to continue with the club. Liddle’s season has been challenging as he’s often played a backup role behind new signing Damien Cook, but discussions have led him to reconsider his future, and he could sign a deal that extends to 2029. His manager, Gavin Orr, indicated that Liddle is content with staying put, especially as Cook may retire after the 2024 season, providing Liddle with more opportunities.

On another note, Willie Peters has emerged as a promising coaching candidate for an NRL position after leading Hull KR to an impressive victory in the Challenge Cup final against Warrington Wolves, coached by Sam Burgess. Peters, who played as a halfback in the NRL during the 1990s and 2000s, has served as an assistant coach with various clubs, and many believe it’s only a matter of time before he secures a head coaching role at one of the currently struggling teams in the league.

In contrast, another coach finds himself under scrutiny following reports of his players expressing dissatisfaction with his conduct, indicating a loss of confidence in his leadership. The club is actively assessing the situation as they consider the coach’s long-term future, casting doubt on whether he will remain at the helm by 2026.
