In a chilling incident, a Woolworths delivery truck was stolen in Bankstown, western Sydney, leading police on a dramatic chase following an assault on the driver. The attack occurred at approximately 5:45 am when the delivery driver was approached by a stranger and was allegedly shocked with a stun gun before being carjacked. Woolworths has condemned the violent act, stating that such behaviour is intolerable in any community.
The 23-year-old driver was assessed by paramedics at the scene and subsequently taken to Bankstown Hospital for further examination. Later in the morning, police spotted the stolen truck on Princes Highway at Rockdale and made attempts to pull it over. However, the driver failed to stop, prompting a pursuit by police.
During the chase, which saw the truck hit several parked vehicles, authorities opted to cease direct pursuit for safety reasons but continued to monitor the situation from a helicopter. The vehicle then moved onto the M8 and M4 highways.
Eventually, police deployed road spikes on the Great Western Highway near Glenbrook to stop the truck. Officers swooped in, using a Taser to apprehend the driver, a 29-year-old man, who was taken to a local police station and later treated for minor injuries at Nepean Hospital. As of now, no charges have been filed related to the incident.
Woolworths expressed its commitment to the safety of its staff and customers, announcing plans to work collaboratively with industry partners, police, and government bodies to address violence within the retail sector. The company has pledged to support the affected driver and has cancelled all online orders associated with the truck, ensuring customers will receive full refunds.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety in the retail environment, drawing attention to the need for improved protection measures for delivery personnel and contractors.
