An 18-year-old woman has been left with severe head injuries following a distressing incident at a fair in Southampton, England, on Sunday (AEST). The mishap occurred when her hair became entangled in a ride at the Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show, necessitating her immediate transport to the hospital.

Attendees with medical training provided initial first aid at the scene, describing the injuries as a “degloving injury”. This type of injury, resulting from severe trauma, can lead to significant physical and psychological consequences.

Witnesses recounted the chaotic moments that ensued after the accident, with one friend stating, “One of the girl’s friends came down and said how serious it was and some of us offered assistance.” She expressed her shock, highlighting the unexpected nature of such an event occurring on rides typically enjoyed by children and asserting that safety measures must be ensured to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In response to the incident, the event organizers issued a statement via their Facebook page, emphasising their full cooperation with the ongoing investigation by authorities. They acknowledged the “unfortunate incident” at the fair, where the show, held annually since 1971, features a variety of vintage vehicles, steam engines, and other entertainment.

The Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show is renowned for its community atmosphere and diverse attractions. With the recent events, there is a heightened call for scrutiny regarding safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all fair attendees.
