A woman is currently missing after being swept away by floodwaters in the Hunter region of New South Wales, as extensive rainfall continues to impact the state. Emergency services were alerted around 7:50 PM on Old North Road in Rothbury, near Cessnock, where a Mini Countryman had become trapped in rising water.

The driver, aged 27, and her passenger, a woman in her 20s, attempted to escape the vehicle, but unfortunately, the passenger was swept away. The driver emerged uninjured. An extensive search operation was launched for the missing woman, involving firefighters and State Emergency Service personnel, but was called off overnight. Efforts to locate her are set to resume today.

In a related incident, SES crews rescued a 40-year-old man who had become trapped in a tree after being caught in the floodwaters nearby. He was treated at the scene before being transported to a hospital for further care.

Due to the severe flooding conditions, Old North Road has been closed and authorities are urging motorists to avoid flooded areas. The SES has issued warnings for flooding across multiple regions of NSW. The forecast indicates that heavy rain will continue in areas, including Coffs Coast, Upper Hunter, and New England, with expected precipitation totals between 65 and 100mm, and some areas may receive up to 130mm.

Emergency warnings have been issued for parts of Scone where significant flooding is anticipated, and residents have been advised to evacuate. An evacuation centre is available at the local Basketball Stadium.

SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan has stressed the importance of avoiding floods, urging residents to steer clear of floodwaters as dangerous conditions persist, including strong winds and black ice in the Northern Tablelands. The SES advises limited travel due to snow and icy conditions, cautioning drivers to operate their vehicles with care.

The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and heed local advisories during this adverse weather situation as the conditions continue to unfold.
