A woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is facing serious charges in connection with the alleged assault, torture, and neglect of a four-year-old girl over a period of ten months. During a recent court appearance at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court, located south of Brisbane, the 32-year-old sought access to a doctor’s medical evidence essential for her defence.

Queensland Police have charged her with 29 offences after her arrest in late January. The allegations include failing to adequately provide for the girl’s basic needs in a way that has reportedly left her “likely to be permanently injured.” Specific charges the woman faces include torture, grievous bodily harm, and six counts of assault, all classified as domestic violence offences that occurred in the Logan suburb of Slacks Creek.

On the day of the hearing, the accused was supposed to appear via video link from the Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre but was excused. Her solicitor, Adriane Hillier, informed Acting Magistrate Gary Finger that while she had received partial evidence from the prosecution, some medical documents were still pending. Hillier requested an adjournment to thoroughly review the extensive brief of evidence provided. The prosecution did not oppose this request, and the matter was adjourned until May 7, while the woman remains in custody.

The investigation into the case was initiated following a tip-off concerning a young girl with serious injuries. Medical staff later discovered that the child had suffered significant harm, including bruises, burns, fractures, and other disfigurements. Detective Acting Inspector Kent Ellis stated that the actions of both the police and investigators potentially saved the child’s life, remarking on the severity of the abuse as some of the worst he has encountered in his career.

Additionally, the woman faces 18 counts related to supplying cannabis from April 2023 to late December 2024, along with charges of possessing drug-related paraphernalia, including scales, clip-seal bags, and a mobile phone suspected of being used for drug crimes.
