In a concerning incident, a toddler was found hidden inside a suitcase in the luggage compartment of an InterCity bus that had made a stop in Kaiwaka, located north of Auckland. This alarming discovery took place when a passenger requested access to the luggage area during a scheduled stop, prompting the bus driver to inspect a moving bag. Inside, they found a two-year-old girl, who despite feeling excessively hot, appeared to have no physical injuries.

A 27-year-old woman has been charged with the ill-treatment and neglect of a child and is expected to appear in court on Monday. Thankfully, no harm came to the child, who has since been taken to the hospital for thorough medical assessments. InterCity, the bus service involved, confirmed awareness of the situation and stated that services have resumed uninterrupted.

As the investigation continues, police have indicated that additional charges may arise as they gather more details about the incident. Oranga Tamariki, the New Zealand government agency focused on the welfare of children, has also been alerted. It is worth noting that children under two can travel for free on InterCity buses.

An InterCity spokesperson expressed regret at the incident but mentioned that due to the ongoing investigation, they are unable to provide further comment at this time.
