Yulia Putintseva, ranked world no.33, recently voiced her concerns about a spectator during her first-round match against Amanda Anisimova at Wimbledon. As she struggled with the score at 0-3, Putintseva approached the umpire, requesting the removal of a crowd member she deemed threatening, stating, “Can you take him out? I’m not going to continue playing until he leaves.” She described the spectator as “dangerous” and insisted that security be summoned to address the situation.

The umpire took immediate action, stepping down from his chair to communicate with security staff. Putintseva expressed escalating anxiety as she returned to the court, suggesting the possibility of violence, saying, “Take him out, maybe he has a knife and he will attack after, I don’t know.” Despite the disruption, Anisimova subsequently won the following point.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has since announced that it will not alter its safety protocols in light of this incident, expressing confidence in their existing measures. A spokesperson for Wimbledon confirmed that the situation was handled appropriately.

Following her request for security intervention, Putintseva went on to suffer a crushing defeat, losing 6-0, 6-0 in a mere 43 minutes. In a visibly emotional moment, she threw her racquet and covered her face with a towel, appearing to wipe away tears before facing her opponent.

Anisimova later remarked on the situation, indicating that she believed the spectator’s behaviour interrupted the flow of the match and noting that she felt adequately protected during the contest.

This incident follows a recent security scare at a previous tournament where a man accused of stalking tennis player Emma Raducanu attempted to gain entry to Wimbledon, although he was thwarted by the AELTC’s safety protocols.

In summary, the AELTC remains confident in its safety measures after the incident involving Putintseva, while both players expressed their perspectives on the situation that unfolded during the match.
