Port Adelaide forward Willie Rioli has addressed the recent racial abuse he faced, following a tumultuous period highlighted by emotional outbursts. Upon returning to training, Rioli expressed that he had reached out to Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell to apologise for his comments after a match where he taunted the club. He reiterated that his feelings were not directed at the current players but stemmed from personal grievances linked to the club’s history with his family.

“I’m doing alright. Support from those around me helps as this stuff tends to blow over quickly,” Rioli shared with 9News Adelaide. He admitted to letting his emotions get the best of him and confirmed his close relationship with Mitchell.

The controversy arose after Rioli engaged in a heated late-game altercation with Hawthorn players, subsequently taking to Instagram to voice his strong dislike for the club due to past experiences involving his father and cousin during their time at Hawthorn. He stated, “My hatred for this club goes way past last year’s antics; it’s about what they did to my dad and brother.”

Port Adelaide’s coach Ken Hinkley condemned the racial abuse directed towards Rioli, emphasising the unacceptable nature of such behaviour in society today. He noted that there should be accountability for those who perpetuate racial hostility.

After taking a brief break from the club, Rioli returned to training, feeling more settled and ready to compete, with Hinkley confirming his availability for the upcoming match against Sydney. Hinkley acknowledged Rioli’s personal struggles but highlighted the club’s respect for Hawthorn, noting that Rioli’s feelings were rooted in his family history rather than animosity towards current players.

With the situation evolving, Rioli is now focused on returning to the field and addressing his challenges as they arise.
