Massive protests erupted across the United States as the nation prepared for a significant military parade in Washington, DC, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the US Army on President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. While Trump had requested the parade, demonstrations led by the “No Kings” group unfolded in cities such as Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Nashville, where protesters gathered to denounce what they described as the president’s dictatorial tendencies.

Protesters took to streets and parks, overshadowing the military spectacle that included tanks and troops set to exhibit national strength on the National Mall. In Washington, anti-war activists displayed messages like “Homes not drones,” against a backdrop of military vehicles and helicopters. Vendors outside sold military memorabilia alongside Trump-themed merchandise.

Crowds rallied in New York, Denver, Chicago, and other cities, enthusiastically brandishing “no kings” banners, with Atlanta’s event quickly reaching capacity. Marchers in Philadelphia chanted slogans as they marched towards the iconic art museum, amid light rain. The mood contrasted starkly with the upcoming parade, which aimed to fulfill Trump’s long-held desire for a grand display of military might reminiscent of events he admired in other countries.

Despite the festivities, significant public dissent lingered. Many Americans were sceptical about the parade’s funding, with polls showing over half of respondents deeming it a poor use of taxpayer money. Accusations surfaced that the parade politicised the military, echoing concerns raised during Trump’s earlier presidency when he sought to deploy troops in civilian unrest scenarios.

As the day of the parade approached, it became evident that protesters would not be silenced. Demonstrators shouted “Trump must go now” and displayed various flags, reinforcing their demands for political change. Trump, however, dismissed concerns about disruptions, vowing that the parade would proceed “rain or shine.”

The military procession, planned to include over 6,600 soldiers, advanced military vehicles, and flyovers by helicopters, was designed not merely as a celebration but as a projection of American strength. Critics continued to voice their discontent, equating the event with Trump’s personal agenda rather than a mere military commemoration, indicating a larger divide in American society.
