Gillars, known for her calming radio presence, became infamous for mocking American soldiers in Europe regarding the loyalty of their partners back home. This led to her being widely reviled among US troops, earning her the derogatory monikers “Axis Sally” and “Berlin Bitch.” After Germany’s surrender in May 1945, she tried to evade capture by masquerading as a refugee but was apprehended by American forces. Subsequently, during her trial, she was given a prison sentence ranging from 10 to 30 years, ultimately being paroled in 1961.
