A rise in makeshift shelters has been observed in Carey Park, Southport, on the Gold Coast, with residents stating they have no alternative accommodations. Among them is Matangi Rau Hira, who articulated the community’s wish for stable housing. “A home would be wonderful to relax in, but sadly, that’s not our reality,” Rau Hira shared with 9News.

Despite interventions from police and housing officials, the group stands firm, indicating they would simply find another location if moved. “We challenge them to tell us where we should go,” Hira remarked, emphasising that good intentions alone fail to address the issue, pointing out that meaningful actions are crucial for real solutions.

Local councillor Brooke Patterson confirmed that move-on orders had been issued due to increasing complaints from the public. However, the Queensland Police stated they would not enforce these orders but would instead focus on collaborating with support agencies to assist the homeless.

Housing Minister Sam O’Connor affirmed the government’s dedication to providing outreach teams to connect with those affected by homelessness. “Our responsibility is to ensure that outreach teams engage with as many individuals as possible. This is what we are funding and will continue to back,” O’Connor stated.

The situation reflects ongoing challenges in addressing homelessness in the area, highlighting a local community’s struggle and the need for effective solutions beyond temporary measures.
