Australia’s liquor trading laws impose strict regulations on alcohol sales during the Easter long weekend, particularly on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

On Good Friday in New South Wales (NSW), takeaway alcohol purchases are banned, and most liquor retailers will be closed. However, some licensed venues will serve drinks on-site, although patrons may need to order a meal. On Saturday, standard trading resumes, while Easter Sunday sees most retail outlets closed again, though licensed premises can operate as usual.

Victoria’s regulations mirror those of NSW, where bottle shops will be closed on Good Friday. Venues will typically start serving drinks from noon, with breweries and distilleries opening earlier at 10 am. Easter Saturday and Sunday have no specific restrictions, returning to regular trading hours.

In Queensland, alcohol takeaway sales are also prohibited on Good Friday, leading to closed retail outlets. Dining venues can serve drinks with substantial meals from 10 am to midnight. Light snacks won’t qualify for alcohol service, which is time-limited around meal orders. After Good Friday, restrictions lift, and regular trading resumes.

South Australia has lifted most restrictions, allowing for unrestricted alcohol sales throughout the Easter weekend. Venues may choose to open for purchases and takeaways, although some liquor stores may close in observance of the public holidays.

Western Australia sees all liquor stores closing on Good Friday, but consumers can enjoy a meal with drinks at clubs and restaurants until 3 am. Takeaway sales are limited, and regular trading resumes over the weekend.

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has no restrictions on Good Friday, but several retailers will close, reopening for the remainder of the weekend. Tasmania follows similar rules with no restrictions, although many shops will still be closed on Good Friday, except for a few select locations.

In summary, if you’re planning to enjoy alcohol over the Easter weekend, be sure to familiarise yourself with your state’s specific regulations to avoid any inconvenience.
