Easter is just around the corner, promising a bounty of chocolate, altered shopping times, and for many, an extended long weekend. While some will be working, most Australians look forward to the opportunity to sleep in and unwind over the public holidays of Good Friday and Easter Monday.
It’s important to note that public holiday designations can vary by state and territory. Across Australia, both Good Friday and Easter Monday are recognised as public holidays, with Good Friday falling on April 18 and Easter Monday on April 21 this year. This arrangement creates a four-day weekend for many, though discrepancies arise in the recognition of other related days.
Easter Saturday is classified as a public holiday in several regions, including New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, and the Northern Territory. In these areas, the official terminology for the day may differ; for instance, it is referred to as “the day after Good Friday” in the ACT and Queensland, while Victorians call it “the Saturday before Easter Sunday.” However, Tasmania and Western Australia do not designate Easter Saturday as a public holiday.
When it comes to Easter Sunday, Tasmania stands apart as the only jurisdiction that does not observe it as a public holiday. Interestingly, Tasmania also uniquely celebrates “Easter Tuesday” on April 22, though this holiday primarily applies to public sector workers.
This year, the placement of Easter also means that the week following Easter Monday culminates with Anzac Day on April 25, leading many to enjoy an abbreviated three-day work week.
As Easter approaches, locals are encouraged to be aware of these differences in public holiday observance, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable long weekend filled with festivities and relaxation.
