Tributes have been abundant for actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, following the discovery of their bodies, with the circumstances of their deaths being described as suspicious by authorities. Although the precise causes of death have yet to be confirmed, a sheriff’s deputy stated that a comprehensive investigation was warranted due to the circumstances surrounding the couple’s demise.
On the day of the incident, a maintenance worker found the front door of their home open during routine checks. Upon entering, he discovered the couple deceased and alerted law enforcement. Initial investigations revealed no immediate signs of a carbon monoxide or natural gas leak, although thorough medical reports typically take four to six weeks to process.
Reports from the scene indicated that Arakawa was found in the bathroom with a space heater nearby and an open bottle of prescription drugs, while a deceased dog was also discovered in the vicinity. Hackman’s body was located on the ground in a different room near the kitchen, leading the deputy to suspect he may have collapsed. Both appeared to have passed away several days prior to their discovery. Two other healthy dogs were found in the home, and there were no signs of forced entry or theft.
Despite the suspicious circumstances, the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office initially indicated that foul play was not suspected. However, they secured a search warrant to look for any potentially harmful substances or evidence of wrongdoing. The New Mexico Gas Company participated in the investigation, confirming no detectable gas leaks at the time of their examination.
