The historic Lexington Hotel in Chicago served as a residence for notorious gangster Al Capone in the late 1920s. During his time there, Capone cleverly utilised a network of hidden tunnels beneath the hotel to escape from police during raids, making it a vital hub for his operations until his arrest in 1932.
Years later, while preparing to demolish the building, construction workers stumbled upon an untouched vault that belonged to Capone, sparking intrigue about its contents. On April 21, 1986, this discovery was broadcast live as a prime-time television special, capturing the public’s attention as the vault was opened for the first time.
