With Brad Fittler stepping back from consideration for the Kangaroos coaching role, former NRL star Cam Smith has expressed his eagerness to explore what the position entails. Mal Meninga, who previously held the position, has moved on to coach the new Perth Bears, creating a need for a new appointment ahead of the upcoming Ashes series.

Fittler announced his decision to withdraw from the race on Monday, citing his desire to concentrate on other commitments. Smith, a veteran who represented Australia 56 times, is keen to engage in discussions regarding the role. In a conversation with Nine’s 100% Footy, he stated his interest in understanding the job’s demands and how it might fit into his current schedule.

“I think I’m definitely interested in having a conversation about the role and what it entails,” Smith noted, revealing that he had yet to speak with anyone from the NRL or the ARL Commission. He added that the news of Fittler’s withdrawal had come as a surprise, as many had anticipated him becoming the next Kangaroos coach.

“Considering the role seriously would involve understanding the commitments involved,” Smith elaborated. With the Ashes series looming and a World Cup on the horizon next year, the appointment is time-sensitive.

Smith acknowledged the challenges of balancing multiple responsibilities, including his role as a commentator and family duties. “I love my work with the commentary team and have three young kids to care for,” he said, sharing he would be attending his eldest child’s netball game in Bundaberg that evening. However, he also recognised the immense opportunity coaching the national team would present. “Having played for the Kangaroos so many times, coaching this team of outstanding athletes would be a remarkable experience.”

Additionally, Kevin Walters, the former Broncos coach, is considered a frontrunner for the coaching post as discussions surrounding suitable candidates for the role continue.
