Nintendo recently showcased its new Switch 2 at an event in New York, unveiling exciting titles such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. Here’s a brief overview of the key features and impressions from the hands-on experience.

The Nintendo Switch 2 feels slightly larger but remains manageable. The new thumbsticks are more comfortable, and the magnetic Joy-Con controllers attach securely, proving surprisingly difficult to detach without the release trigger. The console boasts a stunning 1080p, 120Hz display that significantly enhances visuals, especially in graphics-intensive titles like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, offering a cleaner and smoother experience. However, games like Cyberpunk 2077 don’t leverage the potential of the new hardware as well as expected, while titles like Street Fighter 6 looked substantially better.

The new gameplay mechanics received particular praise, especially in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which introduces mouse controls, allowing for intuitive playstyle shifts without menu navigation. Although mouse mode is effective, traditional controllers may still be preferable for extended sessions. Other games, such as Mario Party and Drag x Drive, emphasised motion controls, although the setup felt somewhat impractical for home use.

The Pro Controller and upgraded GameCube controller maintain familiar designs with minor enhancements, while the newly introduced camera accessory for Mario Party has shown promise, albeit with some limitations on tracking accuracy.

Mario Kart World emerged as a standout, presenting an exhilarating multiplayer experience with complex race mechanics and new items. While the track design encourages exploration, the chaotic nature of gameplay ensures that luck plays a significant role. Notably, Donkey Kong Bananza dazzled with its vibrant visuals and engaging mechanics, reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey, although its camera control may need refinement.

Many titles, including upgraded versions of the beloved Zelda series, were on display, hinting at improved performance and faster load times, although no definitive benchmarks were available during the event. Nintendo’s approach to enhancing existing games is particularly noteworthy, as owners of the originals can access the new editions for free through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

Overall, the event left much anticipation for the launch date of June 5 for Mario Kart World, which aims to redefine the kart racing genre. As excitement builds, fans are eager to see how Nintendo further evolves its gaming ecosystem with the Switch 2.
