Security personnel at numerous major shopping centres across Australia and New Zealand will soon be outfitted with body cameras as part of heightened security measures. This initiative follows a tragic incident nearly a year ago when Queenslander Joel Cauchi carried out a horrific stabbing attack at Westfield Bondi Junction, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, including five women and security guard Faraz Tahir.

Cauchi was ultimately shot by NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott while she acted alone in the shopping centre during the crisis. In reaction to the attack, Scentre Group, which manages 42 Westfield centres, has announced the deployment of body cameras for its security staff.

In its latest Responsible Business Report, Scentre Group revealed that they have also implemented additional personal protective equipment, such as vests, for all security officers in their establishments. The company has trialled various security initiatives, including the team safety camera trial, which is now set to be expanded across all 42 locations in both countries.

The company is also looking into advanced security measures such as enhanced CCTV systems and video analytics. To ensure transparency and inform shoppers of this new security measure, signage will be displayed at the entrances of Westfield centres.

A representative for Scentre Group emphasised that the body cameras aim to enhance the safety of customers, business partners, and staff. The recording function of these cameras can be activated by security officers if they feel concerned for their safety or the safety of others.

In line with ongoing safety improvements, Scentre has confirmed full cooperation with the NSW government ahead of an upcoming inquest related to the Bondi attack, scheduled to start on April 28. They maintain that their security practices are developed in collaboration with law enforcement and government agencies and are committed to continuously enhancing their security capabilities in response to incidents.
