West Indies cricket coach Darren Sammy has publicly responded to serious allegations involving a player accused of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old following a date in March 2023. This situation came to light during the first Test held in Barbados last week.

Addressing the media, Sammy acknowledged awareness of the allegations, stressing his close relationship with the players and their mental well-being. He affirmed the team’s commitment to justice, emphasising the importance of following due process. “We believe in justice… However, there are allegations, and we must respect the legal process,” he stated.

While the accused player cannot be identified due to legal restrictions, Sammy clarified that he is not privy to certain details of the case. He maintained that the player has not yet been charged by law enforcement, saying, “I’m not a judge, and I’m not a prosecutor.” He expressed hope that justice would ultimately prevail.

Cricket West Indies has refrained from commenting further on the matter, citing a lack of official communication regarding the allegations. Consequently, the team remains focused on the upcoming Test match against Australia, expected to line up unchanged from their previous defeat.

As the situation develops, both the team and management await further information while prioritising the mental health of the players involved.
