Young Henry’s Brewery, a beloved fixture in Newtown, Sydney, faces an uncertain future as the Inner West Council reviews a proposal for a new building project that could lead to the brewery’s closure. Established in 2012, this popular brewery has become synonymous with its signature Newtowner pale ale, a staple in local pubs.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese even chose Young Henry’s as the location for his first date with fiancée Jodie Haydon, highlighting the brewery’s status in the community. However, a development application submitted in May could see the brewery replaced by a six-storey residential block, leaving its co-founders, Oscar McMahon and Dan Hampton, with mixed emotions about the potential transition.
McMahon acknowledged the need for housing in the vibrant Inner West but expressed concern over seeking a new home for the brewery, which has cultivated a strong cultural presence. He mentioned that discussions with their landlord have been ongoing, and they are aware of the plans to repurpose the property.
While both McMahon and Hampton remain optimistic about the future, they recognise the disruptive nature of such a move. Young Henry’s has established itself as a cherished cultural hub within the community, and McMahon emphasised the brewery’s commitment to staying connected to Newtown.
“We’ll always be part of Newtown. Our main beer is the Newtowner,” Hampton reassured fans, promising that the brewery will continue to thrive in some form, regardless of its physical location. The community is hopeful that the brewery can navigate these challenges while remaining a key player in the local scene.
