The inaugural match of the AFL season faces uncertainty due to the impending threat of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the cyclone is moving southward across Queensland, with Brisbane expected to be affected this week.

Originally slated for Thursday evening at the Gabba, the season opener features a clash between the Brisbane Lions and Geelong. An AFL spokesperson confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation and will align their decisions with government guidance.

In addition to the Thursday fixture, Saturday’s match at the Gold Coast—where the Suns take on Essendon—is also at risk because of the severe weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the NRL’s schedule remains unaffected for now, as the Dolphins prepare to host the Rabbitohs in Brisbane on Friday night, although there has been no announcement regarding potential issues for that game.

The AFL is scheduled to roll out its Opening Round in Sydney the following Monday. Should the Thursday game be postponed or relocated, the season could commence with the Sydney Swans playing against Hawthorn on Friday night. Another match in the Opening Round will feature the Giants hosting Collingwood in Sydney on Sunday.

Last year, the AFL introduced the Opening Round in an attempt to rival the NRL’s start, which took place in Las Vegas. However, the AFL’s scheduling appears to be a week behind once again, as NRL fixtures continue with their first round in Brisbane and Sydney this week.
