Connor Watson’s return to the Sydney Roosters appears destined for an early conclusion, as the utility player has been granted permission to explore opportunities with other clubs. At 29 years old, Watson, who began his career with the Roosters a decade ago, returned to Bondi in 2022 after a four-year tenure with Newcastle.
Having evolved into a representative-level player, Watson predominantly filled the hooker role for the Roosters last season, demonstrating versatility as a ball-playing utility forward. However, the recent signing of Reece Robson on a long-term contract has prompted the Roosters’ management to facilitate Watson’s exit. With Watson’s contract expiring at the end of next season, the club seems keen to allow him to seek better financial prospects elsewhere.
According to 9News Sydney, Roosters officials communicated to Watson that should he secure a lucrative long-term deal, they would not impede his transition. Given the arrival of Robson, the club believes they have maximised Watson’s contributions.
Watson has already been linked with the Manly Sea Eagles, who may be eager to enhance their squad with his abilities. Another potential suitor could be the newly formed Perth Bears, who are on the lookout for marquee players. Coach Mal Meninga’s interest in securing a high-calibre player like Watson could significantly bolster the Bears’ lineup for their inaugural season, with Watson capable of playing at hooker or lock.
While the St George Illawarra Dragons are struggling early this season and might consider Watson, they are currently well-stocked at the hooker and lock positions. The Canterbury Bulldogs could also emerge as contenders, having previously shown interest in Watson before he re-signed with the Roosters post-ACL injury. His profile aligns well with coach Cameron Ciraldo’s strategic preference for quick and skilled players within the ruck.
Additionally, the Cronulla Sharks are expected to make significant roster changes in the coming months, and Watson’s skill set could enhance their squad. If no advantageous opportunities arise for Watson before next season begins, he remains under contract with the Roosters and might consider options with the PNG Chiefs for the 2028 season.
As of now, both the Roosters and Watson have not provided public updates regarding his future.
