The NSW Waratahs faced a significant setback in their Super Rugby Pacific campaign, suffering a severe defeat against the Chiefs in Hamilton. Following last week’s surprising victory over the ACT Brumbies in Canberra, the Waratahs struggled to maintain momentum, ultimately losing 42-14.
The match began poorly for the Waratahs, with fullback Sid Harvey’s mishap leading to the Chiefs scoring their first try. Although Harvey redeemed himself by scoring NSW’s first try and displaying impressive goal-kicking, the overall performance was marred by the team’s lack of intensity. The Chiefs showcased superior offensive prowess, with several Test players making a notable impact.
Star centre Quinn Tupaea and winger Kyren Taumoefolau each scored two tries, while hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho and flanker Samipeni Finau also contributed to the team’s tally. This victory enabled the Chiefs to climb to third place on the ladder, while the Waratahs linger in seventh with a 3-4 record, urgently needing to reach the top six to qualify for finals.
Captain Matt Philip expressed disappointment, highlighting missed opportunities and errors that hampered the Waratahs’ performance. He acknowledged the team’s inability to control the game, particularly in their own half, allowing the Chiefs’ strong attacking side to exploit their weaknesses within the 22-metre zone.
Philip pointed out, “When we performed well and executed our roles correctly, we achieved positive outcomes, as we did last week. Unfortunately, we failed to maintain that momentum against the Chiefs.” He stressed the need for a thorough review of the match during their upcoming bye week, focusing on improving their performance across the full 80 minutes, enhancing passing accuracy, and addressing discipline issues.
The Waratahs will look to regroup and refine their strategy as they prepare to face future challenges, aiming to regain their standing and push for a finals berth.
