In a disappointing 35-15 defeat, the NSW Waratahs faced a sharp review from coaching staff, especially regarding a particularly disheartening try by Richie Asiata during the first half. Coach Dan McKellar expressed his frustration, labelling the defensive lapses “borderline embarrassing,” particularly with the maul that allowed Asiata to score.
A clear breakdown in the Waratahs’ pack was evident, leaving young halfback Teddy Wilson to fend off relentless Queensland attacks with negligible support. Notably, Taniela Tupou, a prominent Wallabies recruit, seemed to passive as the Reds surged over the line. Waratahs captain Hugh Sinclair identified a straightforward solution: “We’ve got to put the head in the maul and stop it.”
Strangely, the Waratahs forwards had previously shone brightly in their first three games, dominating the early moments against the Reds. However, a yellow card for fullback Andrew Kellaway for a tip tackle on Wallabies captain Harry Wilson marked a significant turning point in the match, leading to NSW’s first loss this season.
At halftime, with the score at 21-8, McKellar maintained an optimistic outlook, believing that executing their game plan could turn the tide. However, soft moments allowed the Reds to capitalise, especially in their home territory. McKellar remarked that for the first 20 minutes they were the stronger side, only to be overwhelmed in the following 60.
Despite the setback, not all is lost for the Waratahs as they prepare for a challenging upcoming match against the in-form ACT Brumbies. The Brumbies will be keen to exploit the Waratahs’ vulnerabilities, particularly after their high-profile off-season recruitment. The Waratahs will be without some key players for the Brumbies encounter; while centre Lalakai Foketi may return from injury, captain Jake Gordon remains sidelined with a knee injury, and fullback Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii is still recovering from a toe issue.
As the Waratahs regroup and look to bounce back, the influence of a proper defensive structure and the return of injured stars will be crucial in their efforts to regain form in the competition.
