Joe Schmidt, the head coach of the Wallabies, is nearing the end of his tenure after opting not to lead the team into the next Rugby World Cup. On Thursday, it was announced that Schmidt has extended his contract until the conclusion of the 2025 Rugby Championship, making him responsible until the last Bledisloe Cup match in Perth on 4 October.
Peter Horne, Rugby Australia’s high-performance director, highlighted Schmidt’s desire to prioritise his family, particularly his son, who has severe epilepsy and lives in New Zealand. Despite needing more time at home, Schmidt expressed satisfaction with his work and the positive influence he’s had on the team.
Schmidt acknowledged the importance of maintaining stability for the upcoming fixtures against South Africa, stating, “The British and Irish Lions is our immediate focus.” RA CEO Phil Waugh recognised Schmidt’s significant contributions, noting his efforts in restoring pride in the Wallabies jersey and engaging fans ahead of major events, starting with the British and Irish Lions series in June.
Rugby Australia is now tasked with finding a new head coach post-2025, while both Schmidt and the governing body are interested in him taking on an advisory role after his departure.
