A 16-year-old boy appeared in court today, marking his first appearance following charges related to extremist comments made online. The teenager was directed to engage in a de-radicalisation programme aimed at addressing violent extremist ideologies.

The case emerged in March when the boy made a troubling comment on the Instagram page of the Australian Islamic House, stating, “I’m going to Christchurch 2.0 this joint.” This remark was widely interpreted as a reference to the tragic Christchurch terror attack in 2019, during which 51 individuals lost their lives. The comment prompted a nationwide investigation by the police, leading to the boy’s arrest at his home in Eaton, approximately 4000 kilometres away from the targeted Sydney mosque.

Following his arrest, police charged the teenager with creating apprehension regarding threats or danger. During their investigation, authorities discovered disturbing content on his mobile phone, including videos of the Christchurch attack. Furthermore, a black ski mask, resembling the one worn by the Christchurch gunman, was found in his possession.

In court, the teenager claimed his comment was intended as a joke; however, the magistrate did not share this view. They highlighted the significant distress his actions had caused within a community already experiencing heightened anxiety. “Your actions have caused fear in a community already on edge,” the magistrate stated.

As a consequence of his behaviour, the teenager has accepted responsibility for his actions and is now mandated to complete a national programme focused on countering violent extremism. This initiative aims to steer individuals away from extremist thoughts and behaviours, promoting social cohesion and safety within the community.
