Perth is set to officially join the National Rugby League (NRL) in the next three years, as confirmed by West Australian Premier Roger Cook, who announced a $65 million deal to establish a new club, the Perth Bears. The Bears are expected to compete in either the 2027 or 2028 season, alongside Papua New Guinea, who have already been confirmed for their inaugural season in 2028.

In his social media announcement, Cook expressed that the establishment of the WA-based NRL club would not only excite local sports fans but also benefit the economy by creating jobs. The NRL is anticipated to provide further details regarding the decision in an announcement on Thursday.

This will be the first appearance of a Perth-based team in Australia’s top-tier rugby league since the Western Reds were disbanded in 1997. The revival of the Bears name comes nearly three decades after the North Sydney Bears were discontinued from the league. Home games for the new team are likely to take place at HBF Park, which is slated for an upgrade in preparation for the Bears’ entry into the league.

Brad Arthur has emerged as a strong candidate for the role of head coach, although further announcements are expected regarding the team’s management and structure. This development marks a significant milestone for rugby league in Western Australia, promising to invigorate the sport in the region and engage a passionate fan base.
