WA Families Affected by Rising Petrol Prices, Forcing Many to Cancel Easter Holiday Plans

A recent survey reveals that economic uncertainty is significantly impacting travel plans for many individuals this Easter, with one in three holidaymakers opting to cancel or postpone their trips. This trend is largely attributed to rising costs reducing consumer confidence, which has fallen to its lowest since the 2008 global financial crisis.

Amidst increasing prices, 63% of respondents indicated that fuel costs were a more significant financial strain compared to 27% who cited interest rates as a concern. Consequently, many are shortening their travel plans or reducing discretionary spending, with 80% of people reported scaling back on additional expenses.

Will Golsby, the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA, expressed concern over the declining confidence in the community, highlighting the potential negative effects this could have on local businesses, particularly in the travel and tourism sectors during the busy Easter period. Golsby is advocating for the government to address escalating transport and household costs in the forthcoming state budget.

Meanwhile, WA Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas emphasised the rising costs of essential items, stating that prices for fish, meat, and fresh produce have surged, further straining household budgets. WA Treasurer Rita Saffioti acknowledged the government’s priority to manage the cost of living, though she remained non-specific about potential budget announcements.

In response to the fuel crisis affecting WA, the state government has enacted new emergency powers, compelling fuel suppliers to disclose essential information about their stock and distribution. The six major fuel companies affected include BP, Viva, Chevron, Mobil, United, and Ampol, with penalties for non-compliance reaching up to $100,000 per day.

Premier Roger Cook noted the importance of transparency from these suppliers, as most have begun complying with the new regulations, while a couple have yet to provide the required information. The government is keen on ensuring that consumers receive the support they need during these challenging times, particularly as families navigate the pressures of rising living costs this holiday season.
