Virat Kohli has indicated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he is considering retiring from Test cricket. However, the BCCI has not accepted his decision, urging him to reconsider his choice as India readies for a tour of England in June and July during which they will play five Test matches.
The situation arises as the Indian cricket calendar remains busy, with a subsequent tour to Bangladesh in August and a hosting of the West Indies for two Tests in October. Reports suggest that Kohli has been reflecting on his retirement due to a challenging performance during the recent Border Gavaskar Trophy series. The Indian Express has stated that Kohli is resolute in his decision and has communicated this to the board.
At 36 years old, Kohli has an impressive record, having played 123 Tests and accumulated 9,230 runs. However, his recent form has been concerning, with only three centuries in the past five years. This adds to the BCCI’s worries, especially since another veteran, Rohit Sharma, has already announced his retirement from Test cricket. The potential loss of Kohli and Sharma simultaneously could significantly weaken the Indian middle order.
The possibility of Kohli retiring without a farewell Test has also raised concerns among fans who wish to see him receive a proper send-off. The BCCI is clearly looking to retain Kohli’s experience and talent within the team as they approach a critical phase in their cricketing calendar.
