The Victorian government has announced an investigation into whether black ice warning signs were functioning during an incident on the Western Freeway at Gordon, near Ballarat, resulting in a serious multi-vehicle collision early in the morning. This crash, which occurred just after 6am, involved three vehicles that skidded on black ice, leading to significant injuries among the occupants.

One driver, a 59-year-old man, sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Meanwhile, two individuals in their 20s, as well as a woman in her 40s, were taken to Ballarat Hospital, where they received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and were reported to be in stable condition.

Following the crash, the freeway was closed for several hours to allow for investigation and clearance but has since resumed normal operation. Local authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant for black ice on roadways, as conditions can change rapidly and create dangerous driving situations.

The government’s inquiry will specifically look into reports that the warning signs designed to alert drivers to icy conditions may not have been operational at the time of the accident. This claim arose from a caller to 3AW who suggested that the signs were turned off. Enver Erdogan, a spokesperson for the government, confirmed that the Department of Transport would thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Black ice warning systems are installed along various routes in Victoria, including the Midland Highway and Calder Freeway. These systems are intended to activate automatically when weather conditions suggest a risk of black ice formation, ensuring that drivers are cautioned about potential hazards.

The Department of Transport and Planning has yet to provide a statement regarding the situation and the ongoing investigation.

Overall, this incident highlights the critical importance of road safety measures and the need for effective communication about hazardous driving conditions, especially in winter months when such risks are heightened.
