Firefighters in Victoria have successfully contained two significant bushfires in national parks located in the south-west region. The Wallaby Rocks fire, which has burnt over 59,000 hectares, was contained recently, while the Yarram Gap Road fire was declared under control earlier this month after impacting 76,000 hectares of land in total.

The Little Desert fire, which ignited on January 27, rapidly spread to over 95,000 hectares, destroying two properties, including a residence and a well-known camping site. In light of these fires, local communities have experienced heightened anxiety, with numerous emergency alerts prompting residents to evacuate.

State Response Controller David Nugent praised the tireless efforts of firefighters, who have been combating bushfires since December, highlighting the challenges faced throughout the extended fire season. He expressed hope for the gradual reopening of affected areas and noted that firefighters will continue to monitor the situation for potential flare-ups.

Looking ahead, fire authorities have cautioned that upcoming days may remain challenging, with strong southerly winds and warm to hot weather predicted, which could complicate containment efforts. Firefighters remain on standby to address any arising incidents.
