In a remarkable display of bravery, a father from Bendigo intervened during a shocking robbery attempt at Stearns Showcase Jewellers in Victoria. The alleged offender had been wreaking havoc by smashing display cabinets with a hammer while staff and customers looked on in fear.

When 31-year-old Anthony Haby heard what sounded like gunfire and cries for help, he sprang into action. “I’m not a hero, I’m just an everyday bloke, doing what needed to be done,” Haby explained to 9News. He felt compelled to assist those in distress, stating that he believed anyone would have reacted similarly in that situation.

While Haby confronted the suspect, his partner, Jane Fleming, attended to the frightened staff. “We just heard screams—terrifying screams—and didn’t even think about it; we just went in,” she recounted. Their quick response helped defuse a potentially deadly situation.

Soon after Haby tackled the would-be thief to the ground, security and police arrived to apprehend the man, who is in his 20s. A staff member, Tina Carson, praised Haby’s actions: “He was amazing—to not think of himself and put himself in danger… he thought it was gunfire and still charged in.”

Despite the trauma from the incident, the jewellery store employees are grateful for Haby’s courage. They have even nominated him for a bravery award, as they believe he truly embodies the spirit of heroism. Store manager Cheryl Luvara expressed hope that Haby would receive the recognition he deserves.

Following the incident, the alleged perpetrator appeared at the Bendigo Magistrates Court, where he did not seek bail and was remanded in custody until August.

Reflecting on the event, Haby placed the well-being of others above his own safety, remarking, “I’m just glad we could help and that no one got hurt—that was the main concern.” His actions have inspired many and underscored the importance of community support in times of crisis.
