As Victorians grapple with a cost of living crisis this winter, the challenge of providing for both families and pets has become increasingly difficult. In response, the charity Pets of the Homeless has initiated a virtual pet food drive to ensure that pets do not go hungry.

The Okirwa family, who have a three-year-old dog named Cougar, have experienced this struggle directly. Jessica Okirwa noted the deep bond their family shares with Cougar, expressing that they couldn’t imagine their lives without him. However, rising expenses led them to contemplate relinquishing their beloved pet, with Jessica reflecting on the tough decision to consider adoption as an option amid their financial challenges.

Fortunately, Pets of the Homeless stepped in to assist them with dog food costs, alleviating some of their burden during this trying time. The charity’s virtual pet food drive has been designed to allow community members to purchase pet food online. Once ordered, the charity packages and distributes the food to those in need across Victoria.

Yvonne Hong, the charity’s CEO, explained that the process is straightforward—individuals can conveniently shop for pet food online, which is then provided to the community through partnerships with 76 local organisations. Demand for the charity’s services has surged significantly, with the number of meals provided each month spiking from 40,000 to nearly 80,000, according to Hong.

In light of this increasing demand, Pets of the Homeless is calling on the public for further support. They announced that donations received until June 30 will be matched, enhancing the impact of community contributions. Jessica Okirwa urged the public to help in any capacity, stressing how meaningful support can be, noting it has already made a difference for her family.

Through the ongoing efforts of Pets of the Homeless, many Victorian families facing financial hardship can find relief, ensuring that their furry companions are fed and cared for during these challenging times.
