Public Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams announced a phased introduction of new ticketing systems across Victoria’s rail network starting next year. This initiative includes the installation of over 20,000 new card readers, facilitating a gradual transition for commuters.
Currently reliant on physical cards, Melbourne commuters will soon have options to use bank cards, smartphones, or wearable devices for tap-on access. In the initial rollout, only full-fare adult tickets will be available for purchase via these digital means.
Williams emphasised the need for a careful and gradual implementation to avoid disruptions in daily travel for commuters, stating, “We need to both build this new system and keep the current system operating.” This overhaul is viewed as a significant update to Victoria’s ticketing framework, enhancing convenience for users.
The upgraded infrastructure aims to streamline access to public transport while modernising the ticketing experience for the diverse needs of Victorian commuters.
