Premier Jacinta Allan is set to announce significant reforms today that aim to introduce stricter bail conditions for individuals charged with serious offences, including home invasions. In a recent cabinet meeting lasting 2.5 hours, officials also discussed the potential implementation of a ban on machetes.

This announcement follows a protest in Bendigo where numerous victims of crime and their supporters rallied for more stringent bail laws. Rally leader Tanya Mallia highlighted the urgent need for change, emphasising concerns for community safety and the well-being of children, stating that the Premier must take immediate action.

Allan is expected to reveal the proposed changes in a press conference at 9:30am in Melbourne. In a social media update earlier today, she noted that the government has been attentive to public concerns and has taken action accordingly.

The new bail legislation is described as among the strictest in Australia, with a focus on preserving community safety. Allan indicated that the reforms would prioritise public protection in all bail decisions and introduce a challenging new bail assessment specifically aimed at repeat offenders of serious crimes. These measures are intended to reinforce the seriousness of bail conditions, ensuring accountability for those who violate them.

The proposed legislation is expected to be presented in Parliament next week, marking a decisive step in tackling community safety concerns regarding bail practices.
