Victoria’s Premier, Jacinta Allan, has announced a statewide ban on the sale of machetes effective from noon on May 28, 2024, with the prohibition set to last until September 1. This ban entails no exceptions and is part of a broader governmental effort to enhance public safety. The decision comes in light of escalating concerns over violence related to such weapons; recent incidents, including a violent confrontation at a Melbourne shopping centre, have prompted urgent action.

Allan stated that these weapons are dangerous and do not belong in public spaces. She highlighted that this sales ban was made possible by groundwork laid for a subsequent total possession ban, which will also be established on September 1.

The government defines a machete as a cutting tool with a blade exceeding 20 cm, but clarifies that kitchen knives are excluded from this classification. Retailers are advised to secure their current stock until guidelines for disposal and an amnesty are initiated in September.

Consumer Affairs Minister Nick Staikos indicated that a task force will be formed to ensure compliance with the ban, emphasizing that any failures to adhere to the prohibition could lead to significant penalties, including fines upwards of $200,000 and potential imprisonment.

Allan acknowledged that the interim ban may disrupt business operations but stressed the necessity of removing these hazardous items from shelves and streets to safeguard the community.
