Victoria is bracing for a scorching weekend, with temperatures potentially hitting 40 degrees Celsius in several areas. Strong winds and extreme heat are prompting fire authorities to remain vigilant, particularly as events unfold at Melbourne’s Albert Park for Formula 1 fans.
The forecast predicts hot, dry north-westerly winds across most of the state, which will elevate fire danger levels. The Northern Plains are expected to experience the highest temperatures, while other regions will see highs in the mid to high 30s, with Gippsland anticipating a slightly cooler 30 degrees.
As the heat builds on Saturday evening, Melbourne and large parts of northern, central, and eastern Victoria will feel the warmth. Tim Wiebusch, acting commissioner of Emergency Management Victoria, cautioned that these conditions could lead to increased fire risks.
Wiebusch highlighted the state’s dry landscape, mentioning that approximately 70 bushfires have already been reported this week. He urged residents to stay alert and informed, especially given that the weather may exacerbate fire hazards in the coming days.
He recommended that anyone travelling throughout the state should check local conditions before setting out. Furthermore, Wiebusch advised Victorians to download the VicEmergency app or visit the VicEmergency website for real-time updates and warnings. It’s important for community members to prepare for potential disruptions, with advice to have supplies ready to last up to 72 hours in case of emergencies.
On Sunday, weather conditions are expected to shift. Initially, mild temperatures and light rain are forecasted in the morning, ahead of a cold front moving into the state. This front may bring showers and the possibility of severe thunderstorms, including damaging winds and heavy rainfall across northern and eastern Victoria throughout the day, along with more showers and brisk south-westerly winds in the afternoon.
As Victorians face the imminent heatwave, staying informed and prepared will be crucial to navigating the challenging conditions ahead.
