Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has expressed her disapproval of what she refers to as “an era of divisive, Trump-style rhetoric” while announcing her upcoming trip to China, marking her first visit since taking on the role of Premier. Scheduled for September, the visit aims to initiate trade discussions with a spectrum of stakeholders, including the government, businesses, educational institutions, and community groups.
Allan’s objectives for this trip encompass the formulation of a “new China strategy” for Victoria, emphasising the state’s potential offerings to the Chinese market, which include food and fibre, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, medtech and pharmaceuticals, tourism, creative industries, and international education. She believes these key sectors represent Victoria’s strengths and are fundamental to the state’s growth prospects in the Asian marketplace.
In her statements, Allan has highlighted the importance of fostering economic ties with China, particularly in the context of recent politically charged rhetoric that she feels has adversely affected Chinese Australian families.
