Meet Abi, a vibrant humanoid companion designed to uplift residents in aged care. With her love for dancing, bubble-blowing, and fluency in 90 languages, Abi enhances communication between staff and residents. More than just a robot, she can recognise individuals, understand emotions, and forge friendships, becoming a source of joy in their lives.
Grace Brown, founder of Andromeda, emphasises Abi’s mission to tackle loneliness in aged care settings, where approximately 60% of residents rarely receive visits from family or friends. Residents perceive Abi not as a machine, but as a cherished grandchild, fostering a sense of companionship.
The long-term goal of this initiative is ambitious; it aims to replace a billion hours of solitude with moments of happiness and connection. Currently, Abi is undergoing trials at an aged care facility in Prahran, Melbourne, with plans to expand her presence to 22 facilities across Victoria by mid-year. This innovative approach seeks to create a supportive environment for those in aged care, making their lives brighter and more fulfilling.
