Two seasoned swimmers experienced a distressing incident while swimming between Coogee and Gordons Bay in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, as powerful waves battered the New South Wales coastline over the weekend. As they navigated the rough waters, both men encountered difficulties, with one sustaining a back injury and minor grazes, while the other managed to reach safety.

Emergency services responded promptly, stabilising the injured swimmer before hoisting both men to safety via helicopter. The injured individual was subsequently transported to hospital in stable condition.

This incident occurred amidst warnings from authorities about the anticipated hazardous surf conditions that New South Wales was facing, including significant swells and elevated tides. NSW Premier Chris Minns issued a caution to the public, urging them to remain vigilant and avoid risky behaviour in the water. He highlighted the dangers associated with such conditions, referencing the tragic loss of six lives during similar hazardous conditions over the previous Easter weekend.

Minns emphasised the seriousness of the situation, stating, “We’re expecting major swells, huge surf,” and stressed that individuals could find themselves in life-threatening situations if they engage in reckless activities. “Don’t take a risk that could see you lose your life or the life of a loved one,” he warned.

As New South Wales braces for these challenging coastal conditions, it serves as a stark reminder of the ocean’s unpredictable nature and the need for swimmers and beachgoers to prioritise safety.
