A 62-year-old man named Dominic O’Brien, who passed away six days after being reportedly assaulted at a Melbourne shopping strip, has been remembered for his distinguished career as a photographer for several news organisations, including Nine’s The Age.

O’Brien was critically injured during an alleged incident with a man recently released from immigration detention in Footscray last Sunday morning. Following the encounter, he was quickly taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries earlier today.

Shortly after the incident, police apprehended a 43-year-old man without a fixed address. Initially charged with intentionally causing serious injury, the authorities are now evaluating whether to enhance his charges following O’Brien’s death and the results of his postmortem examination.

It has been revealed that the suspect was wearing an ankle monitoring device at the time of the altercation. He had been released from indefinite detention last year, a decision stemming from a High Court ruling. Currently, he is awaiting his court appearance in October, back in custody.
